Details: Johnson said the most essential message to get across to Putin is that Russia is no longer an empire.
He pointed out that while Britain used to have an empire, it is now almost entirely gone. He noted that the British Empire was seven times the size of the Roman Empire and the largest empire in history, but said the UK was happy with its post-imperialist role.
He stressed that there is no need to control other countries, saying: "If you love someone, let them go."
"What Putin is doing is archaic and barbaric, and he needs to understand that Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania – none of these countries are part of the Russian imperium anymore, and nor is Ukraine. It's over," Johnson said, adding emphatically: "No more empire, Vladimir, you f**king idiot!"
Johnson immediately apologised for swearing but added: "That's the way it is."
Background:
- In November, Boris Johnson urged the international community to provide Ukraine with a US$500 billion loan to help it end the war and to announce a date by which Ukraine would join NATO.
- He also said he believes British troops could be deployed in Ukraine if US President-elect Donald Trump cuts military aid to Kyiv.
