British intel: Russian casualties in Avdiivka among highest of war

Russian military casualties over the last six weeks in its offensive operations against the Avdiivka “have likely seen some of the highest Russian casualty rates of the war so far”, the UK Defense Ministry reported.

According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russian casualties are running at a daily average of 931 per day.

The previous deadliest reported month for Russia was March 2022, with an average of 776 losses per day during the height of Russia’s assault on Bakhmut.

The UK Defence Intelligence said that although they couldn’t verify the methodology behind the Russian casualty figures, the totals – encompassing both killed and wounded Russian personnel – are “plausible.”

Avdiivka is a Ukrainian-controlled city in the Donetsk Oblast, which the Russian Army has been trying to occupy since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

Starting on October 14, 2023, Russia started a general push to encircle the city, committing thousands of troops and hundreds of military vehicles. For now, the Russian offensive on Avdiivka achieved limited successes at a high cost in terms of soldiers, armor, and vital assets. However, the city remains under Ukrainian control and the fighting continues.
