Brother of former Olympic champion Serhii Bubka charged with selling fuel to Russians

Vasyl Bubka, brother of six-times Olympic pole vault champion Serhii Bubka, has been served in absentia with a notice of suspicion for collaboration (Art. 111-1.4 of the Criminal Code) and assisting a terrorist organisation (Art. 258-3.1 of the Criminal Code).

Source: This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General.

The Office of the Prosecutor General has also issued a summons to Vasyl Bubka for service of a notice of suspicion in writing and other procedural actions.

Background:

  • In early July, journalists from Bihus.Info reported that a Russian company named Mont Blanc, owned by Bubka and his brother Vasyl, was operating in the temporarily occupied territories and selling fuel to the Russian occupiers.
  • The investigators found that in May 2023, the company had signed official contracts with the occupiers to supply fuel worth over RUB 800,000 (approx. US$8,700).
  • According to Bihus.Info, after the plot was revealed, the Security Service of Ukraine opened criminal proceedings.
  • At the time, Bubka himself made no comment on the documents the investigators had found.
  • In August, investigators discovered that despite criminal proceedings having been opened against him on suspicion of aiding the aggressor state, Serhii Bubka remains a member of Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee, and the Russian companies he co-owns with his brother have entered into further contracts with the invaders.
  • The Olympic champion and former head of Ukraine’s National Olympic Committee then stated that he had "nothing to do with any business in the occupied territory" and that "a campaign to destroy his reputation" had been waged against him.
  • Serhii Bubka remains a member of the National Olympic Committee.
