Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) has conceded to Republican challenger Dave McCormick in Pennsylvania's Senate race on Thursday.
“I just called Dave McCormick to congratulate him on his election to represent Pennsylvania in the United States Senate,” Casey said in a statement released on Thursday. “As the first count of ballots is completed, Pennsylvanians can move forward with the knowledge that their voices were heard, whether their vote was the first to be counted or the last.”
After the vote totals were within the one-half of 1 percent margin, it triggered an automatic recount. The Associated Press (AP) called the race for McCormick two days after Election Day. The Hill’s partner, Decision Desk HQ, called the contest for the Republican a week ago.
Casey’s statement comes just days after the Keystone State started the recount process. The state’s highest court ordered Monday that counties could not count mail-in and absentee ballots with incorrect or missing dates.
Casey, a son of Pennsylvania’s former governor, served three terms in the upper chamber and vowed to continue fighting for the working and middle classes if reelected for another six years.
McCormick, a businessman, beat the Democratic incumbent in one of the country’s tightest races after losing to Dr. Mehmet Oz in the 2022 Senate Republican primary.
“Senator Bob Casey dedicated his career to bettering our commonwealth. Dina and I want to extend our sincere gratitude to Senator Casey, Terese, and their family for their decades of service, hard work, and personal sacrifice,” McCormick said in a Thursday statement on the social platform X.
“I am so honored to represent every single citizen in Pennsylvania in the United States Senate and will fight for you every day,” he added. “Thank you!”
