"We respect the choice of the American people and express our congratulations to Mr Trump on his election as president," the Foreign Ministry said in the statement.
"Our policy towards the US is consistent," said Mao Ning, spokeswoman for China's Foreign Ministry, at a regular press conference in Beijing, answering a question about how Trump's return to the Oval Office would affect US-China relations.
"We will continue to view and handle China-US relations in accordance with the principles of mutual respect, peaceful co-existence and win-win cooperation," she was quoted as saying by Reuters.
