EU allocates additional funds for training of Ukrainian military

The Council of the European Union will allocate €194 million for the training of the Ukrainian Armed Forces under the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine).

In total, the EU funding for training the Ukrainian military has now reached €225 million. In addition to training, the funds will also be allocated for lethal and non-lethal equipment. Such support will be granted through the European Peace Facility (EPF).

The European Peace Facility is an off-budget instrument to enhance the EU’s ability to prevent conflicts, build peace, and strengthen international security. It enables financing operational actions with military or defense implications under the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP).

“The objective of today’s decision is to continue supporting the capacity building of the Ukrainian Armed Forces by EUMAM, based on Ukrainian needs and taking into account the increasing scope and complexity of the training curriculum. This support will continue facilitating large-scale training of Ukrainian Armed Forces personnel and enable EU member states to provide required training equipment and supplies,” the statement of the Council of the EU said.

EUMAM Ukraine has trained more than 34,000 Ukrainian soldiers since the mission’s launch. On 17 October 2022, the Council of the EU adopted a decision establishing EUMAM Ukraine with an initial duration of two years.
