Hochul says New Yorkers who vote Republican are ‘anti-woman’ and ‘anti-American’

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) said New Yorkers who vote Republican in the state’s tight congressional races are “anti-woman” and “anti-American.”

“If you’re voting for these Republicans in New York, you are voting for someone who supports Donald Trump, and you’re anti-woman, you’re anti-abortion, and basically, you’re anti-American because you have just trashed American values and what our country is about over and over and you wear this on Election Day,” Hochul said Saturday on MSNBC’s “PoliticsNation,” highlighted by Mediaite.

Hochul argued that Trump’s rally in New York City last weekend backfired on him and said she wanted to remind her constituents what their vote means to her.

The governor is one of several top Democrats looking to turn out voters not just for Vice President Harris’s run against former President Trump, but for Democrats running in tight House races in the state, too.

Rep. Pat Ryan (D-N.Y.) is leading his Republican challenger Alison Esposito in New York’s 18th Congressional District, but Republican Rep. Mike Lawler (N.Y.) is leading former Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-N.Y.) in the state’s 17th Congressional District, new polling showed.

In a post on X, Lawler responded to Hochul's remarks, calling her an "embarrassment" to the state.

"@KathyHochul is an embarrassment to our state — completely incoherent and incapable of leading. Attacking New Yorkers who support President Trump as un-American? She previously told New Yorkers who didn’t agree with her to move to Florida. I’m shocked her favorables are so low," Lawler said.

Trump's rally last weekend was held at Madison Square Garden. The decision for the Manhattan rally may have been puzzling since the city is solidly blue, but it was intended to drum up energy for Republicans in the races as both parties look to have control of the lower chamber over the next two years.
