Details: Szijjártó said Sybiha will visit Budapest next week to discuss the two countries’ unresolved dispute over the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine.
Budapest claims that previously, Ukraine’s Hungarians could receive Hungarian-medium education at primary and secondary school level and apply to study at institutes of higher education in Hungarian, but now, from the 4th grade onwards, they no longer have this right.
Szijjártó said he hoped that a solution can be found by Ukraine’s new foreign minister.
Background:
- The language question and the rights of the Hungarian minority in Ukraine are among the most controversial issues between Kyiv and Budapest.
- Hungary unblocked the start of Ukraine's EU membership negotiations when it succeeded in including its demands regarding the Hungarian minority in the negotiating framework. European Pravda has previously analysed these demands in detail.
- Meanwhile, Hungary's first state-run bilingual secondary school for Ukrainian children recently opened in Budapest.
