HUR hackers attack Russian internet providers in occupied Crimea
Network disruptions are possibile in the peninsula, warned Kremlin-installed authorities.
A source in the Main Directorate of Intelligence of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry (HUR) has told UkrInform that the agency’s hackers conducted cyber attacks on Russian internet providers in temporarily occupied Crimea.
According to the source, occupation authorities warned residents of possible network disruptions.
“It seems Russian cyber experts should remember about import substitution, switch to their ‘CheburNet’ instead of the global network, and install a genuinely Russian firewall, isolating themselves from the free world. Only then will they have a chance to protect themselves from our attacks,” the source added.
For many years, reports have been circulating in social media and media outlets that Russia is preparing its internet network, which would block international services designated as undesirable. This system has been jokingly called “CheburNet”.
The source also reminded UkrInform that Russian servers, online services, and network infrastructure have been targeted systematically recently.
For example, in early June, intelligence cyber specialists launched assaults on the websites of the Russian Federation’s Ministry of Justice, Defense Ministry, Ministry of Information Technologies and Communications, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Emergency Situations, and Ministry of Industry and Energy.
