“I’m fortunate to have been born in Ukraine,” says young Kyiv resident

The ongoing war with Russia has not deterred Ukrainians from valuing their independence. This pursuit of self-determination has historical precedent, with resistance against Russian control dating back centuries.

“Independence means charting our own course without external interference. Ukraine has the right to choose its own path,” a Kyiv resident explains.

The dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991 initially appeared to secure Ukrainian independence peacefully. However, Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea and the 2022 full-scale invasion have challenged this status. As the war continues, Ukrainians maintain their stance.

“I’m fortunate to have been born in Ukraine. For me, there is no braver, more resilient, or more beautiful country on Earth,” another citizen states.

Despite claims in Russian propaganda about shared heritage, Ukrainians assert their distinct identity. While historical circumstances led to periods of shared statehood, Ukraine now pursues an independent course separate from Russian influence.
