ISW: Russians made progress near Pokrovsk and Selydove
The Russian military can sustain deployments of 600 troops per week for assaults near Selydove, demonstrating significant reserve capacity in the area, a Ukrainian commander reports.
Russian forces have achieved territorial gains southeast of Pokrovsk and in the Vuhledar area, the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reported on 28 October.
According to the ISW, footage from October 27-28 showed Russian forces moving into positions north of Selydove, within Vyshneve, and near Novodmytrivka.
For over a year, Russia has concentrated on seizing the Ukrainian cities of Donetsk Oblast, with major attacks repeatedly occurring near Pokrovsk, Selydove, and other towns.
The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed the capture of Tsukuryne and credited the 114th Motorized Rifle Brigade with the operation.
A Ukrainian company commander operating near Selydove provided insight into Russian tactics, saying Russian forces “can afford to deploy 600 troops per week to infantry assaults” in the area.
According to a Ukrainian brigade spokesperson, Russian forces have adjusted their strategy, reducing artillery strikes in favor of precision attacks using FPV drones. The spokesperson also said that Russian forces had redistributed personnel from the northern Pokrovsk direction to support operations near Selydove.
In the Vuhledar sector, geolocated footage from 25-28 October documents Russian advances southwest of Yelyzavetivka and Katerynivka and northeast of Shakhtarske. The footage shows Ukrainian forces repelling both platoon- and company-sized mechanized assaults, ISW reports.
Ukrainian analytical project Deep State also reported on 29 October that Russian forces have advanced near five settlements in the Donetsk Oblast. According to the project, Russia managed to advance in Novoselidivka, Bohoyavlenka, Katerynivka, near Horoshne and Shakhtarske in Donetsk Oblast.
