ISW: Ukraine advances in Vovchansk, near Pokrovsk, Russians make gains near Kreminna and Chasiv Yar
Ukrainian forces reclaimed positions in Vovchansk and near Pokrovsk, while Russian troops make advances near Kreminna, Chasiv Yar, and southwest of Donetsk City, per ISW.
Both Ukrainian and Russian forces made territorial gains in various regions, according to the Institute for the Study of War’s (ISW) report from 16 September.
In Kharkiv Oblast, Ukrainian forces have recently advanced northeast of Kharkiv City. Geolocated footage from 16 September shows Russian forces striking Ukrainian positions in the Vovchansk Aggregate Plant in central Vovchansk, indicating that Ukrainian forces had recently regained lost positions within the plant. Russian forces conducted offensive operations in the area on 15 and 16 September.
Ukrainian Kharkiv Group of Forces Spokesperson Colonel Vitaliy Sarantsev stated on 16 September that Russian forces continue attacks within Vovchansk, but the tempo of Russian activity in other areas in the Kharkiv direction has marginally decreased.
In Luhansk Oblast, Russian forces have recently advanced northwest of Kreminna. Geolocated footage from 15 September indicates a marginal Russian advance near a windbreak southeast of Luhansk’s Makiivka.
In Donetsk Oblast, Russian forces have made recent advances south of Chasiv Yar. Geolocated footage from 16 September shows elements of the “Shustry” detachment of Chechen Akhmat Spetsnaz and the 4th Motorized Rifle Brigade recently advancing across the Siverskyi-Donets Donbas Canal south of Chasiv Yar towards Stupochky.
Ukrainian forces have recently regained lost positions southeast of Pokrovsk. Geolocated footage from 16 September indicates that Ukrainian forces recently regained positions in western Mykhailivka. However, Russian forces have also recently advanced southeast of Pokrovsk, with geolocated footage showing a Russian advance to Buriaka Street in northern Zhelanne Pershe.
Southwest of Donetsk City, Russian forces continued to advance near Vuhledar. Geolocated footage from 15 September shows Russian forces demolishing a tower at the Pivdennodonbaska No. 3 coal mine, indicating a recent advance in the area.
