Japan will contribute approximately $37 million to NATO’s trust fund for unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) detecting systems in Ukraine, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa said at a joint press conference with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on 7 January in Kyiv.
During the joint press conference held in a shelter due to the threat of a ballistic strike by Russian forces, Kamikawa also announced that the Japanese delegation had delivered five mobile gas turbine power generators and seven transformers to Ukraine.
“Today, I will participate in the handover ceremony for this equipment,” she said.
Minister Kamikawa also mentioned that Japan would assist the health sector and shelter development for women and children. She said that Japan would continue strengthening bilateral cooperation between the two countries for Ukraine’s further development.
“I condemn the prolonged missile and drone attacks by Russia on all regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv, even during the New Year holidays. I express my respect for the courage of the Ukrainian people united against Russian aggression,” Minister Kamikawa said.
On the morning of 7 January, Japanese Foreign Minister Yoko Kamikawa made an unannounced visit to Ukraine for the first time since taking the post in September 2023, the Japanese Foreign Ministry reported.
The visit came ahead of a conference that Japan and Ukraine will jointly host in Tokyo on 19 February to discuss Ukraine’s post-war reconstruction. Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal is to attend the conference in Japan in person.
