JD Vance backs Trump on Syria: 'This is not our fight'

Vice President-elect JD Vance backed President-elect Trump’s position on Syria, whose government collapsed as rebels marched into the capital city of Damascus early Sunday morning.

“As President Trump said, this is not our fight and we should stay out of it,” Vance said in a post on X Sunday, several hours after rebels took the city.

Vance echoed a sentiment Trump expressed Saturday, when reports indicated rebels were heading toward Damascus after successfully seizing other major cities and significant portions of land that the government had previously controlled.

“Syria is a mess, but is not our friend, & THE UNITED STATES SHOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH IT. THIS IS NOT OUR FIGHT. LET IT PLAY OUT. DO NOT GET INVOLVED!” Trump wrote on Saturday morning.

Vance, in his post, also pushed back on a statement that celebrated the rebels’ victory as a win for freedom, saying, “Opinions like the below make me nervous.”

“The last time this guy was celebrating events in Syria we saw the mass slaughter of Christians and a refugee crisis that destabilized Europe,” Vance said, adding that many of the rebels are offshoots of terrorist organizations.

“One can hope they’ve moderated,” Vance said. “Time will tell.”

The rebels’ victory marked the end of the Assad family’s 50-year rule in Syria, which has been destroyed by its civil war.
