On 11 January, during a joint briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Riga, Latvian President Edgars Rinkevics announced a new military aid package for Ukraine.
During his Baltic tour, Zelenskyy also visited Lithuania and Estonia, where he secured new commitments for long-term assistance from both countries.
Rinkevics detailed that the aid package was assembled in response to the current needs of the Ukrainian defense forces, including self-propelled howitzers, 155 mm ammunition, anti-tank weapons, helicopters, and drones.
The package also includes SUVs, communication equipment, generators, winter gear, and more, Rinkevics stated.
“We appreciate that Latvia’s principled stance has always been with Ukraine: within the institutions of the European Union, NATO, and in international organizations everywhere. I am grateful for the new defense package, which we discussed in detail during our meeting,” President Zelenskyy said.
Furthermore, Rinkevics informed that Latvia plans to train 3,000 Ukrainian soldiers throughout 2024 and will continue rehabilitation projects for Ukrainian military personnel and border guards.
In addition, the Latvian President mentioned that his country is leading a “coalition of drones” among allies providing military support to Ukraine.
