The Saeima, Latvia’s parliament, unanimously adopted amendments to the Law on Support for the Ukrainian Civilian Population under an urgent procedure on 16 February 2023. These amendments allow Latvia to transfer vehicles owned by the state to Ukraine.

This includes cars confiscated from drivers caught driving under the influence of alcohol.

Since these amendments came into effect, the government has made several decisions to transfer confiscated vehicles to Ukraine.

A total of 612 vehicles worth approximately €2.25 million have been handed over to Ukraine, VID reports.

Background: Former Latvian Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš stated in an interview with European Pravda that 100% of Latvian society supports Ukraine – even drunk drivers.
