In 2023, Latvia transferred 271 vehicles to Ukraine, seized from intoxicated Latvian drivers, with a total value exceeding 900,000 euros, as reported by the Latvian publication Delfi.
Documents are being prepared in Latvia to donate an additional 34 seized vehicles worth approximately €160,000, Delfi reports.
In February 2023, the Latvian parliament unanimously passed amendments to the Law on Support for Ukrainian Society, allowing the transfer of confiscated vehicles to Ukraine at no cost. The law enables Latvian authorities to seize cars from drivers caught operating a vehicle while intoxicated. Rather than holding public auctions to sell these confiscated vehicles, they can now be directly granted to Ukraine.
Under this new law, the Latvian government has made several decisions to transfer confiscated cars to Ukraine.
