Latvia raises over $ 219 thousand in aid for Azov brigade

Latvian volunteers collected approximately $219,000 in donations to purchase aid for Ukraine’s National Guard Azov brigade, reports LSM.lv.

The Azov Brigade, originally a volunteer militia formed in 2014, is now an official regiment of the National Guard of Ukraine. It has played a significant role in the defense of Ukraine, particularly in the siege of Mariupol in 2022.

The aid package, set to be delivered in October, includes over 100 Latvian-made FPV drones, ration packs, two off-road vehicles, and nine powerful generators.

“People feel that they have not been left alone in this war and in this struggle,” said Guntars Jansons, a representative of Support AZOV Latvia, the organization coordinating the aid effort.

Support AZOV Latvia maintains constant communication with Ukrainian military personnel. The volunteers note that they continue to raise funds for the Azov fighters on the crowdfunding site Ziedot.lv until mid-October.

The Latvian Ministry of Defense announced last month that it would transfer CVR(T) armored reconnaissance vehicles to Ukraine, which Latvia had previously purchased from Britain.

Latvia also would provide Ukraine with hundreds of units of computer equipment, as well as specialized clothing, binoculars, and other equipment for the Defense Forces.

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Latvia has contributed both military and humanitarian aid, including weapons, vehicles, and essential supplies, with its assistance valued at over 1% of Latvia’s GDP.
