Pete Hegseth, President-elect Trump’s embattled pick for Defense secretary, is facing growing scrutiny on Capitol Hill — but says he won't back down from the fight.
Hegseth has already been the subject of accusations of sexual assault stemming from a 2017 encounter he says was consensual. But fresh revelations emerged over the weekend involving alcohol abuse and sexual misconduct in his past.
The Wall Street Journal reported Tuesday that President-elect Trump is considering replacing Hegseth with Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), the onetime presidential hopeful. Some Republicans have expressed concerns about Hegseth, noting he will have "hard questions" to answer in his quest to lead the Pentagon.
Also on Capitol Hill, all eyes will be on House Republicans' razor-thin majority for next year, jockeying for committee leadership roles and ongoing planning for Trump's first 100-day agenda. Meanwhile, Democrats in both chambers continue to brace for the Republican trifecta that will take form next month.
