Lviv Mayor: Gas explosion in private house kills 3, injures 4

A gas explosion in a private house in Lviv killed at least three people and injured four others, including two children aged 11 and 12, Lviv city Mayor Andrii Sadovyy said on 23 December.

The bodies of two men, aged about 45-50, were found under the rubble, Sadovyy said. A woman around the age of 70 was found in the adjacent house.

The injured, who suffered burns to their bodies, received medical care at the hospital, the spokesman for the Main Directorate of the State Emergency Service in Lviv Oblast, Vitaliy Turovtsev, said to Radio Liberty.

According to Turovtsev, the emergency services received a report at 8:53 pm that a gas explosion had occurred in a private house.

Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyy said later that the explosion occurred in the garage of a private house, probably from gas. Six people lived in that private house. Sadovyy said the causes and consequences are still being investigated.

According to Sadovyy, 50 rescuers were working at the site, searching for people and trying to mitigate the explosion’s aftermath.
