Most Ukrainians confident in victory with Western support, new survey shows
A new study reveals that over 80% of Ukrainians believe the country can win the war against Russia if the West continues to support their country.
The latest survey by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology, conducted from 20 September to 3 October 2024, shows that most Ukrainians believe that the West wants their country to end the war on acceptable terms.
At the same time, an overwhelming majority of Ukrainians—81%—continue to consider that Ukraine can succeed if the West provides proper support, according to the latest research.
The “Omnibus” public opinion poll, which questioned 989 respondents, found such results. It was conducted among adults aged 18 and older who were citizens of Ukraine and lived in territory controlled by the Ukrainian government. Residents of territories temporarily not under Ukrainian control were not included in the study.
“Ukrainians fully understand the importance of Western support for effectively resisting Russian aggression. From the very beginning of the full-scale invasion, they viewed it as a joint effort between Ukraine and its Western allies against the aggressor, Russia,” the survey stated.
In September 2022, 80% of Ukrainians regarded the success of the Ukrainian army as a shared achievement of Ukraine and the West. In the same survey, 73% expressed confidence that the West wants Ukraine to end the war on acceptable terms.
In February 2023, 81% of Ukrainians believed that cooperation between Ukraine and the West to repel Russian aggression was a “win-win” situation, benefiting both Ukraine and the West.
Currently, an overwhelming majority of Ukrainians—81%—believe that Ukraine can succeed if properly supported by the West. Only 14% consider Russia strong compared to 7% in December 2023. Another 6% of respondents hesitated to answer.
At the same time, between December 2023 and September 2024, belief in Ukraine’s victory declined in all regions except the West.
