Pelosi returns to DC after hip surgery in Germany

Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) said she is en route to Washington after recently undergoing a hip replacement surgery in Germany following a fall in Luxembourg last month.

“I am on my way to Washington to proudly represent the people of San Francisco in Congress. I'm honored to do so to share our San Francisco values,” Pelosi said in a video posted Thursday on the social platform X. “Thank you for giving me that honor.”

Pelosi, 84, traveled alongside 17 other lawmakers to Luxembourg last month for the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge. The California veteran lawmaker sustained an injury after falling down. She was hospitalized in Luxembourg

The former House Speaker was then transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany, where she underwent a “successful” surgery, according to her spokesperson

The update from Pelosi comes as all House Democrats are expected to be in attendance in the Capitol on Friday for the vote to choose the next Speaker of the lower chamber, according to the Democratic whip’s office

Democrats’ presence on Capitol Hill on Friday will be of significance, as the Republican Party has a razor-thin majority and some members of the GOP caucus have made threats to not support Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) to retain his position in the 119th Congress this year.

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) said he would not back Johnson on Friday, meaning that one more Republican Party “no” vote would deny Johnson the gavel, assuming that all Democrats are on the floor and vote for House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.).

If one Democratic lawmaker is absent, then Johnson can have two defections in his party and still secure the Speakership.
