Details: In the letter to the leaders of the US House and Senate Defense Policy and Appropriations Committees, McCord indicated that the Department of Defense is currently spending the last US$1.07 billion to purchase new weapons and equipment that will replace those that will be sent to Ukraine from US stockpiles.
"Once these funds are obligated, the department will have exhausted the funding available to us for security assistance to Ukraine," the Pentagon official wrote.
He specified that in the absence of a decision by the US Congress on additional funding, the Defense Department will only be able to finance the replacement of another package of military assistance until 30 December.
The last such military aid package was announced on 12 December, amounting to US$200 million.
In October, the White House requested that the US Congress authorise more funding, including over US$60 billion for Ukraine. However, because of differences in opinion between the two parties regarding border security with Mexico, the decision on funding is yet to be made by the Senate.
The White House has urged Congress not to delay passing additional support for Ukraine, pointing to Russian President Vladimir Putin's new threats against Ukraine during his press conference on 14 December.
However, the US Senate and Congress in general are unlikely to pass new border security restrictions by the end of the year, which are crucial for the allocation of billions of dollars in aid to Ukraine.
