Poland leads Ukraine support effort with 4.91% GDP contribution

According to the Office of the President of Poland, Poland has emerged as the top contributor of aid to Ukraine relative to its GDP, with total support amounting to 4.91% of its GDP.

The report follows the recent statements of Polish President Andrzej Duda, saying that Poland cannot maintain previous levels of military aid to Ukraine.

According to the report, Poland’s total assistance amounts to 4.91% of the country’s GDP, of which 0.71% is directed to military support for Ukraine and 4.2% to refugee assistance

“When everyone was afraid and hesitant when Germans were sending helmets, we were sending tanks,” President Andrzej Duda said in an interview with Kanal Zero in August 2024.

Reports indicate that Poland’s military assistance to Ukraine has reached €3.23 billion (over $3,5 bn). Poland has transferred approximately 1,000 pieces of heavy equipment, including tanks, armored personnel carriers, and other military vehicles.

Duda told Bild earlier that Poland sent 240 tanks to Ukraine, specifically ones that the Ukrainian army knows how to operate. Documentation shows that Poland has provided over 350 tanks in total, including 14 modern Leopard 2A4 tanks, 60 PT-91 tanks, and 280 T72-series vehicles.

The air support package includes 14 MiG-29 fighter jets and 12 Mi-24 helicopters, with the first fighters delivered in March 2023.

Poland has also trained approximately 25,000 Ukrainian soldiers, 14,500 of whom were trained under the EU’s EUMAM mission. The country has provided 20,000 Starlink sets with ongoing maintenance support and over 100 million pieces of ammunition of various types and calibers.

In a recent meeting with community and district leaders of the western part of Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said that Poland failed to transfer MiG fighter jets to Ukraine despite prior agreements.

Zelenskyy has recently appointed the new Ambassador to Poland. it became Ukraine’s former Ambassador to Türkiye, Vasyl Bodnar.
