Poll: 33% of Russians back war’s continuation, 40% want troop withdrawal from Ukraine

A recent Russian opinion poll indicates that the number of Russians who fully support the war in Ukraine has almost halved since February 2023 and that more Russians support a withdrawal of Russian forces from Ukraine than do not, ISW reports

Independent Russian opposition polling organization Chronicles stated that data from its 17-22 October 2023, telephone survey indicates that individuals termed “consistent” war supporters – those who endorsed the war, opposed troop withdrawal without achieving war objectives, and prioritized military spending – decreased from 22% to 12% between February and October 2023.

Chronicles reported that 40% of respondents favored the withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine without the attainment of war goals, and this figure has consistently hovered around 39% to 40% throughout 2023.

Chronicles stated that 33% of respondents opposed a Russian withdrawal and preferred the continuation of the war. Notably, this percentage has steadily decreased from 47% in February 2023 to 39% in July 2023. Recent polling by the independent Russian organization Levada Center, released on October 31, revealed that 55% of respondents advocated for Russia to initiate peace negotiations, while 38% expressed a preference for continuing the war.
