According to Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto, former Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko planned to meet with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, which Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) later used to justify denying Poroshenko permission to travel abroad.
Szijjarto made these claims on 4 December during a hearing in the Hungarian parliament, as reported by Telex. The foreign minister stated that the potential meeting was initiated at Poroshenko’s request. He noted that Orban is always willing to hold talks with anybody, including former leaders of foreign countries.
Controversy as SBU claims ex-president’s banned foreign visit had “Russian psy-op risk”
On 2 December, Ukraine’s Security Service said that Russia planned to use a purported meeting during the visit with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban for an “information-psychological special operation.”
However, Poroshenko claimed the travel ban was an “insane attack on unity” and precluded important meetings with international decision-makers with the aim of securing aid for Ukraine.
