Recognizing the Democratic Transition in Guatemala
Antony J. Blinken, Secretary of State The United States congratulates Bernardo Arévalo and Karin Herrera on their inaugurations as President and Vice President of Guatemala. We applaud the Guatemalan people for advancing the cause of democracy under challenging circumstances. We also commend Guatemala’s institutions, civil society, and the international community for safeguarding electoral integrity, voting systems, and processes. The Organization of American States played a particularly critical role during the lengthy transition period, and continued leadership from the OAS in the coming months will be essential. We look forward to working with President Arévalo and his administration to deepen our countries’ long and productive partnership and promote economic prosperity, human rights, good governance, anti-corruption measures, and safe and orderly migration.
