Russian leader Vladimir Putin will not consider peace negotiations on the war in Ukraine until he knows the result of the 2024 US presidential election, a senior official from the Joe Biden administration has said, Reuters reports.
The official made the suggestion during the NATO foreign ministers meeting in Brussels amid concerns that former US President Donald Trump could win the elections next year.
Trump, the leading candidate for the Republican presidential nomination, has been critical of US support for Ukraine.
Asked if they were expressing a personal opinion or the position of the US government, the official said it was a “widely shared premise”.
“That was the context in which the allies all expressed strong support for Ukraine,” they added.
Earlier, Republican presidential candidate Ron DeSantis had said he had opposed NATO membership for Ukraine.
