Reuters: US set to announce new military aid package for Ukraine
A new military aid package for Ukraine, worth up to $400 million, is expected to be announced on March 12, according to Reuters, citing unnamed US officials.
The US is set to announce a new military aid package for Ukraine, valued at up to $400 million, according to two US officials who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity. This announcement, expected later on 12 March, marks the first such initiative in months amidst a backdrop of blocked additional funds for Kyiv by Republican leaders in Congress.
One official revealed that the financing for this package comes from credits refunded to the Pentagon for recent purchases. This move aligns with President Joe Biden’s continued support for military aid to Ukraine following Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022.
The announcement comes as the House faces pressure to pass a $95 billion national security package that includes aid for Ukraine, Israel, and the Indo-Pacific region. Although this legislation has already cleared the Senate with a 70-29 vote, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson has resisted putting the aid bill up for a vote in the House.
