The German defence conglomerate Rheinmetall has received an order from the Ukrainian government to build an ammunition factory, which was announced in February.

The project is expected to commence in the short term, with ammunition production slated to start within 24 months. The exact value of the contract is not specified, but Rheinmetall describes the amount as "low three-digit million euro range" (meaning over €100 million).

The facility will produce 155 mm artillery rounds, including propellant charges. The precise production volumes are not detailed, but it will be a "six-figure number," meaning at least 100,000 rounds per year.

Quote: "We are putting our words into action and together with our partner we will create a Ukrainian competence centre for ammunition. The order underlines the confidence in Rheinmetall's expertise and manufacturing capacities. We are grateful to be able to support the country in its re-industrialisation and in strengthening its defence capability," said Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG.

Background:

  • Ukrainian Defence Industry, an association of multi-product businesses in various sectors of Ukraine's defence industry of Ukraine, has opened its first foreign office in Washington, USA.
  • Italy plans to purchase hundreds of tanks from Rheinmetall, worth around €20 billion, marking the largest order in the history of the German defence conglomerate.
