Details: Orpo stated that Russia "is evidently preparing for a long conflict with the West, and represents a permanent and existential military threat to Europe".
Quote: "Imagine what will happen next if Russia succeeds [in Ukraine - ed.]," the Finnish prime minister told MEPs.
He did, however, note that Russia's military capabilities are limited and that each euro spent on supporting Ukraine is "a low price compared to the alternative costs if Russia wins".
Orpo went on to say that while Russia is not "invincible", for Europe, "self-satisfaction is no longer an option", and it must strengthen its defence capabilities and border security.
Quote: "We can overcome this challenge if we pool our resources together. We have the financial means – now we need to demonstrate our political commitment."
In recent weeks, several European NATO countries have issued warnings about the possibility of Russian aggression in the near future. Estonia’s Foreign Intelligence Service believes Russia is preparing for a military confrontation with the West within the next decade.
US intelligence, however, believes that Russia will almost certainly avoid a direct military conflict with NATO and will instead use "asymmetric measures".
