Russian companies hire teenagers more often now because of staff shortage

Since the beginning of 2024, the demand for underage labour has increased in Russia: companies have offered more than 3 million jobs to young people aged 14 to 18.

Details: The number of job offers is 28% higher than in the same period in 2023. Currently, an average of two to three teenagers work in Russian companies of various sizes.

Another recruitment service in Russia confirms that teenagers are most often hired as cashiers, couriers, order pickers and call centre operators. 

The main reason for the growing demand for teenage labour is the shortage of labour amid low unemployment in Russia.

Background:

• Russian telecommunications equipment manufacturers have faced a shortage of domestic components and asked the government to reconsider the timing of import substitution. 
• The Russian Ministry of Economic Development predicts that the country's industrial production growth rate will halve, dropping to 2%, in 2025.
