Russian authorities in the occupied districts of Ukraine’s Kherson Oblast have started dismantling memorials dedicated to the victims of the 1932–1933 Holodomor, Stalin’s man-made famine, as reported by the Zmina media outlet, which cited Russian sources. The authorities justify this action as a fight against alleged manipulations and disinformation.
The occupation administration referred to the Holodomor monuments as purported “tools of manipulation,” supposedly designed to incite hatred towards Russia.
“This is not an attack on monuments, but rather the removal of a symbol of disinformation,” Zmina wrote, citing the occupation administration of the Oleshky community.
Russian sources indicate that monuments in both the Oleshky and Ivanivka communities have been targeted, with at least 14 objects being removed in the latter, as reported by the occupation administration of the area.
Yurii Sobolevskyi, the first deputy head of the Kherson Regional Council, also confirmed the destruction of these monuments.
“For Russia, erasing actual history is a commonplace practice. They have modified their own history extensively and adeptly manipulate historical facts for their benefit,” remarked Sobolevskyi.
The National Museum of the Holodomor has requested law enforcement to investigate the razing of the monuments and to identify those responsible.
“The intentional suppression and distortion of the Holodomor’s history act as a component of the information warfare that the Russian Federation conducts against Ukraine,” the museum stated.
