Russia’s massive missile attack on Ukraine kills at least four, injures 34 civilians

On the morning of 8 January, the Russian forces fired dozens of missiles at Ukrainian cities and villages.

As of 10:19, it was known that the air attack killed at least two civilians and injured 33 more, according to Oleksii Kuleba, Deputy Head of the Presidential Office. As of 11:00, the death toll rose to four, the injury toll to 34.

Russian missiles hit multiple cities across Ukraine, causing casualties among civilians

Ukraine’s Air Force says the Russian air attack targeted critical infrastructure, industrial, civilian and military facilities. Unlike previous attack focused mainly on Kyiv, this attack targeted different regions of Ukraine. In particular, ballistic missiles were fired at Kharkiv, Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia and Khmelnytskyi oblasts.

• Kryvyi Rih City and its district, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast: the missiles targeted a shopping center, high-rise buildings, and detached homes, killing a 62-year-old woman and injuring a man, according to oblast authorities.

• Novomoskovsk, Dnipropetrovsk Oblast: detached and apartment houses were damaged, with 24 civilians injured, including five children, according to Oblast Head Serhii Lysak.
• Kharkiv City: the attack injured two, according to Oleksii Kuleba.
• Zmiiv, Kharkiv Oblast: the attack damaged civilian facilities, killing a 63-year-old woman and injuring two other people. Two people were rescued from the rubble, the oblast authorities reported.

• Zaporizhzhia: The missiles hit residential areas, injuring five locals, the Oblast Administration said.

• Khmelnytskyi Oblast: two people were killed in the attack, according to local authorities.

Ukraine downs 18/51 missiles and 8/8 drones

Ukraine’s Air Force says Russia used various air assets in the January 8 attack, including  cruise, air-based, ballistic, anti-aircraft guided missiles, and one-way attack UAVs.

According to the Air Force, Russia fired a total of 59 missiles and drones:

• 8 Shahed-136/131 suicide UAVs launched from the Primorsko-Akhtarsk area of Russia;
• 7 S-300/S-400 anti-aircraft guided missiles in their secondary ground-attack role, launched from Russia’s Belgorod Oblast;
• 4 Kh-47M2 Kinzhal aeroballistic missiles launched from four MiG-31K aircraft from the area of Russia’s Ryazan and Tambov;
• 24 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles launched from 11 Tu-95MS strategic bombers from Russia’s Engels;
• 8 Kh-22 cruise missiles launched from Tu-22M3 bombers from Belgorod Oblast;
• 6 Iskander-M ballistic missiles launched from occupied Crimea’s Dzhankoi and Chauda areas;
• 2 Kh-31P guided missiles from tactical aircraft from Belgorod Oblast.

The Air Force says Ukraine’s air defenders destroyed:

• All 8 Shahed-136/131 drones;
• 18 Kh-101/Kh-555/Kh-55 cruise missiles.

“It should be added that not all of the enemy missiles that failed to be shot down reached their targets,” the Air Force noted.

Russia’s previous large-scale missile attacks occurred on 29 December and 2 January.
