Details: Scholz said that the German government had made several decisions regarding military support for Ukraine, which he considers very sensible. These include the fact that Germany will not lift the range restrictions.

"This [long-range strikes against Russia – ed.] is not in line with my personal position... We will not do this. And we have good reasons for that," he added.

Background:

  • The German Chancellor also emphasised that Berlin will not supply Ukraine with long-range precision weapons in the future, regardless of the decisions taken by NATO partners.
  • The longest-range weapon currently supplied by Germany is the Mars II missile system, which can hit targets at a distance of 84 kilometres. Berlin allows this and the Panzerhaubitze 2000 with a range of 56 kilometres to be used against targets on Russian territory near Kharkiv Oblast.
  • The Times reports that the United States and the United Kingdom are allegedly preparing to give Ukraine permission to use Storm Shadow missiles to strike Russian territory, but that the announcement will not be made public to preserve the element of surprise for Russia.
