Scholz says Germany should support Ukraine even more if other countries’ aid dithers

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said that his country should be ready to help Ukraine even more if other countries “weaken”. He said this at the conference of the Social Democratic Party of Germany on 8 December, N-TV quoted him as saying.

As Euromaidan Press reported earlier, Scholz does not expect the war in Ukraine to end quickly, therefore it is important “that we are able to do what is necessary for a long time,” namely “to continue to support Ukraine in its defense campaign,” and Kremlin boss Putin should not rely on the West to let up.

With its invasion of Ukraine in 2022, Russia had “canceled all agreements on peace and security in Europe,” said the German Chancellor. There must be clarity that “borders in Europe will no longer be moved by force.”

Germany would even have to be prepared to do even more “if others weaken,” said the Chancellor, apparently alluding to the unclear political situation in the USA ahead of next year’s presidential elections. Therefore, there must be decisions on the German side “that we are in a position to do so,” according to Scholz, N-TV says.

Scholz also emphasized his commitment to further military support for Ukraine, so that Russian President Vladimir Putin “must not count on us letting up.“

The Chancellor also referred to the economic consequences of Russian imperialism for Germany, and even more so for some other countries:

“We know that there have been consequences that also affect us,” said the Chancellor, referring to the high energy prices as an example. He stressed that the government had nevertheless succeeded in ensuring a good energy supply, even if this was “a major financial challenge.”

Meanwhile, German polls show that Chancellor Olaf Scholz ratings hit record low: if general elections were held now, he would only receive 14% of the vote, which is another 2% lower than last month’s figure and the lowest since 2021, as per DeutschlandTrend, a monthly tracking of political sentiment among the German electorate, DW reported.
