Hungary is seeking a review of the European Union’s policy towards Ukraine’s bid for formal membership into the bloc, according to Sky News.
The EU plans to assign €50bn in aid for Kyiv from its budget until 2027 and start talks with Ukraine in December 2023.
However, Viktor Orban, Hungary’s prime minister said he is opposed to Ukraine’s EU membership negotiations. He argues that the money and military aid that have already been sent to Ukraine have proven ineffective.
“We need a period of reflection and a strategic discussion on the policy of the European Union towards Ukraine,” Janos Boka, Hungary’s affairs minister, added.
Until such considerations take place, Budapest will withhold support for any EU decisions promoting Ukraine’s accession, he said.
