Statement on the Passing of the Most Venerable Thích Tuệ Sỹ
Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson On behalf of the American people, we share our deep condolences with the people of Vietnam and followers around the world on the passing of the Most Venerable Thích Tuệ Sỹ, a prominent leader of the Unified Buddhist Church of Vietnam. For decades, Thích Tuệ Sỹ was a tireless champion for freedom of religion or belief and related human rights, which led Vietnamese authorities to imprison him for more than a decade. He was also a learned scholar and prolific writer and philosopher. Thích Tuệ Sỹ’s voice will be sorely missed as we reflect on his advocacy for the people of Vietnam. Our thoughts are with his UBCV community in Vietnam and around the world.
