'Stay tuned': Canadian leader vows action after Trump's latest attack

Ontario Premier Doug Ford responded to President Donald Trump's threats of further tariffs — with a promise to react.

Speaking to MSNBC on Tuesday, Ford, a conservative, warned there will be a response to Trump's latest salvo in the ongoing trade war with the USA's northern neigbor.

After Trump levied the first tariffs on Canada, that nation hit the U.S. with their own levies. Ford, the leader of the most populated province, then issued an energy surcharge on U.S. states that use Canadian energy — Minnesota, Michigan, and New York.

Trump then responded, doubling the tax on aluminum and steel and promising a national emergency to deal with the electricity levy.

"Doubling the tariff on aluminum — the U.S. can only manufacture 16% aluminum, that they need," Ford said. "The balance for the most part, comes from Quebec. Over 60-65%. It's going to hurt your manufacturing. You need the aluminum. You need our high-grade nickel. And I want to send more high-grade nickel. You need our electricity. You need the 4.3 million barrels of oil that get shipped down."

He went on to call the trade war absurd at a time that the U.S. and Canada should be working together cooperatively.

"I want to make sure we build an American fortress. The two greatest countries in the world fighting like this does not make sense. But I will respond appropriately on the electricity. Stay tuned," Ford promised.

Trump responded to the ordeal by questioning why the U.S. was buying electricity from another country.
