Switzerland announces $13 million in winter aid for Ukraine

On 21 December, the Swiss Government announced an allocation of 11.8 million Swiss francs (over $13.6 million) in additional assistance for Ukraine during the winter period.

“These measures include the government’s support for several non-governmental organizations that are delivering life-saving winter assistance. This assistance has made it possible to repair almost 1,000 flats and houses and distribute heating material to around 1,300 households in frontline areas.,” the press release stated.

The total Swiss investment in winter aid measures amounts to about 26 million Swiss francs (over $30 million). In recent months, specialists from the Swiss Humanitarian Aid Unit have played a crucial role in restoring water supply systems and pumping stations, ensuring centralized heating, and providing access to clean drinking water.

Last autumn, Switzerland also dispatched 20 tons of equipment from the Ministry of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service.

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation is increasing its support for the United Nations Humanitarian Fund’s assistance program in Ukraine by 1.8 million Swiss francs (about $2 million). The funds are earmarked for heating, winter clothing, rental support, and housing insulation.

Additionally, 3 million Swiss francs (nearly $3.5 million) have been allocated to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees’ winter aid program, benefiting internally displaced persons and citizens living in areas affected by Russian military aggression.

Switzerland’s State Secretariat for Economic Affairs is committing 10 million Swiss francs (about $11.6 million) to the European Energy Community’s Energy Support Fund, which will aid in repairing Ukraine’s damaged energy infrastructure.
