Today’s action underscores the U.S. government’s commitment to target destabilizing forces and threats emanating from Iran, including those threatening our regional partners. We will continue to target Al-Ashtar Brigades operatives and financial sources wherever they are located. These designations highlight the critical role Iran plays in providing support to Al-Ashtar Brigades. In 2018, the government of Bahrain prosecuted numerous individuals for terrorism-related activities. A number of these individuals fled Bahrain to evade prison sentences and settled in Iran, which has long supported and continues to serve as a safe haven for terrorist groups. The Department of State designated Al-Ashtar Brigades as a Foreign Terrorist Organization and a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in 2018. The Department of the Treasury designations were taken pursuant to Executive Order 13224, as amended, which targets terrorist groups and their supporters.
