Trump wins Miami-Dade County after years of Democratic support

Former President Trump will prevail comfortably in Florida’s Miami-Dade County, a heavily Hispanic area that until recently was a Democratic stronghold, according to projections.

Trump led Vice President Harris in the county by about 11 points with nearly 95 percent of the vote counted as of 8:45 p.m. EST. The former president was projected to win the state and led by about 14 points.

Miami-Dade is a majority Latino district and was reliably Democratic for decades. Even as Florida as a whole voted for Trump in 2016 and 2020, the county voted for Hillary Clinton and President Biden, the latter of whom won it by about 7 points.

But the county has shifted more conservative in recent years. It voted for Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis in his 2022 reelection by about 11 points. The district previously voted overwhelmingly against him during his first election in 2018.

Republicans have sought to make inroads with Hispanic voters in recent years, while Democrats have still won most of these voters. And the demographic could be critical in determining the outcome of states with significant Hispanic populations like Arizona and Nevada.
