Trumps picks former Sen. David Perdue as ambassador to China

President-elect Trump has tapped former Georgia Sen. David Perdue (R) to serve as the ambassador to China.

"Tonight, I am announcing that former U.S. Senator, David Perdue, has accepted my appointment as the next United States Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China," Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Thursday.

Perdue, who served as a senator from 2015 to 2021, was a member of both the Armed Services and Foreign Relations committees. He ran for governor of Georgia in 2021 and was endorsed by Trump.

In 2021, Perdue said he would support challenging the Electoral College vote if he remained in the Senate — something he had indicated he would back in the past, which earned the praise of Trump who wrote, “David is a great guy and a patriot.”

"He will be instrumental in implementing my strategy to maintain Peace in the region, and a productive working relationship with China’s leaders. David has been a loyal supporter and friend, and I look forward to working with him in his new role!" Trump wrote in the post.

Jon Ossoff (D) defeated Perdue to nab his Georgia Senate seat after a runoff election in January of 2021.
