Details: Erdoğan believes that this reform should take place rapidly.
"One of the key outcomes of World War II, which claimed millions of lives, was the establishment of the United Nations – a broad platform designed to unite nations, both large and small. But can we continue to rely on the UN in its current form? No, we cannot. The UN requires a comprehensive reform," Erdoğan said.
He also added that the fate of countries "cannot be left in the hands of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council".
Background:
- Earlier, Finland's President Alexander Stubb proposed expanding the UN Security Council, abolishing single-state veto powers, and suspending members involved in "illegal wars," citing Russia's invasion of Ukraine as an example.
- Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda also expressed his belief in the need to reform the UN Security Council amid Russia's war against Ukraine.
