UK intelligence says Ukrainian strikes have reduced Russia's oil refining capacity

UK Defence Intelligence has analysed the impact of Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Russian facilities on Russia's oil refining industry.

Details: The UK MoD reported that it is likely that Russia's oil refining capacity has temporarily plummeted on account of numerous Ukrainian UAV strikes on oil refineries across Russia.

Analysts noted that the Russian Federation imposed a six-month ban on petrol exports on 1 March 2024 to stabilise prices in the domestic market amid rising demand.

"The export ban will relieve pressure on supplies and enable Russia to make repairs to its refineries," the review stated.

However, intelligence indicated that repairs are likely to take longer than usual, as Western sanctions hinder Russia's ability to import some of the critical components.

"The Russian Government will be particularly sensitive to rising prices for gasoline and other daily commodities in the run-up to the 15-17 March Russian presidential election," the UK MoD stressed.
