Ukraine condemns North Korea's missile launch, point out Russia's influence

Ukraine’s Foreign Ministry condemned North Korea's launch of an intercontinental ballistic missile on 18 December, pointing out the Democratic People's Republic of Korea’s (DPRK) cooperation with Russia.

Details: The Foreign Ministry called Pyongyang's launch of the ICBM "yet another piece of evidence of the North Korean regime's systematic disregard for relevant UN Security Council resolutions on the DPRK's nuclear and missile programmes."

Quote: "Ukraine supports the efforts of partner countries to exert pressure on Pyongyang in order to uphold the international order and prevent actions that could lead to further aggravation of the security situation on the Korean Peninsula and in the whole world," the statement said.

Along with this, the Foreign Ministry demands a swift response to any nation, "primarily the Russian Federation", that violates international agreements by aiding North Korea in the development of its nuclear and missile programmes.

On Monday, the DPRK launched an intercontinental ballistic missile capable of reaching anywhere in the United States.

Such launches underscore North Korea's efforts to replenish its arsenal with longer-range weapons that could potentially reach the mainland United States.

Monday's missile launch comes after North Korea launched a short-range ballistic missile on Sunday evening that flew about 570 kilometres and fell into the ocean.

Following that launch, North Korea issued a blistering statement condemning the United States for orchestrating what it called a "prototype nuclear war," including the arrival of a nuclear submarine in South Korea on Sunday.

In November, Pyongyang successfully launched a military spy satellite into orbit, most likely with Russian assistance. The EU and US both denounced the action.
