Ukraine convenes IAEA Board meeting over Russian attacks on nuclear power plant substations

Ukraine is initiating an extraordinary meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency's (IAEA) Board of Governors on 12 December.

Details: "Ukraine is convening an extraordinary meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors on 12 December in response to Russian attacks on our critical energy infrastructure," he said.

Sybiha noted that Russian attacks on power substations, which are identified by the IAEA as critical to nuclear safety and security, pose a threat to global security.

Background:

• In October, Energoatom, Ukraine's state-owned nuclear power company, identified seven substations critical for power supply from nuclear power plants, which are covered by the work of IAEA missions.
• During a Russian attack on the night of 15-16 November and the morning of 17 November, four electrical substations, which the IAEA had identified as crucial to Ukraine's nuclear safety, were damaged.
• Further Russian attacks on Ukraine's power grid could lead to an emergency at one of the three operating nuclear power plants still under Kyiv's control.
