Ukraine downs all of Russia’s 20 explosive drones, as Russian missiles strike Donetsk Oblast

Overnight on 9 April, Russian forces attacked several regions of Ukraine with 20 Shahed-131/136 one-way attack drones. The Ukrainian air defenders managed to shoot down all of them, said Mykola Oleshchuk, commander of the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. No casualties specifically linked to the Russian air attack have been reported.

Russia has been carrying out air attacks against Ukraine on a daily basis for months, targeting primarily civilian infrastructure during the nighttime. On the previous night, the Russians launched 24 Shaheds, targeting infrastructure in at least five regions.

The air defense activities resulted in downing all of the 20 Shaheds in the skies of Mykolaiv, Odesa, Kherson, Dnipropetrovsk, Poltava, Vinnytsia, and Lviv oblasts, as per the commander.

According to Oleshchuk, Russia launched an attack with four S-300 anti-aircraft-guided missiles from the occupied part of Donetsk Oblast.

The air attack was repelled by the Air Force’s fighter aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, and electronic warfare units, along with the Defense Forces’ mobile fire groups, as per Oleshchuk.

The Ukraine South Defense Forces reported intense air defense operations last night lasting about two hours. Nine loitering munitions were successfully engaged: one in Odesa, two in Kherson, and three each in Mykolaiv and Dnipropetrovsk oblasts. In Odesa district, falling debris from a downed drone damaged a private residence and severed a power line. There were no injuries.

The General Staff of Ukraine’s Army reports 56 combat engagements on the front in the past day. The Russian military launched four missile strikes, 97 aerial strikes, and 92 attacks with multiple launch rocket systems on Ukrainian military positions and civilian settlements. These attacks resulted in casualties and injuries among civilians, with damage or destruction to high-rise buildings and other civilian infrastructure.
