Ukraine fires US-made ATACMS at Russia for first time

Ukraine fired U.S.-made long-range missiles inside of Russia on Tuesday for the first time since a restriction was lifted by Washington, according to Russian officials.

The Russian Ministry of Defense said in a Telegram post that a facility was struck in the Russian region of Bryansk with the Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) long-range missiles.

Ukraine has not publicly commented on the ATACMS, including if they are now authorized for use inside of Russia.

But Andriy Kovalenko, head of the National Security and Defense Council's Center for Countering Disinformation, said in a Tuesday post on Telegram that Ukraine struck an ammo depot in Bryansk, without confirming the involvement of the long-range missiles.

The news came on the same day Russian President Vladimir Putin updated his nuclear doctrine to say aggression from a nonnuclear state with the support of a nuclear-armed state would be considered a joint attack and could trigger Moscow's nuclear response.

The Biden administration on Sunday reportedly lifted a restriction for Ukraine that had prevented it from using ATACMS to strike deep into Russia.

U.S. officials have yet to confirm the ATACMS policy lift but have publicly said Russia has escalated the war by sending some 10,000 North Korean troops into the Russian region of Kursk to fight against Ukrainian forces that took territory there in a surprise August attack.
