Ukraine joins European power grid, boosts electricity trade

On 28 November, the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E) announced the completion of a synchronization project with Ukraine and an increase in export capacity from continental Europe to Ukraine.

Ukrenergo, Ukraine’s national electricity transmission system operator,
has been transferred to the mode of permanent synchronization with the European power system. Thus, Ukraine completed a historic synchronization project with continental Europe and joined the largest electricity network in the world.

“Ukrenergo has achieved compliance with the key technical requirements necessary to enable a permanent interconnection between the power systems of Continental Europe and Ukraine,” the statement of the ENTSO-E said.

In addition to permanent synchronization, ENTSO-E has decided to increase the capacity limit for electricity trade from continental Europe to Ukraine and Moldova to 1,700 megawatts (MW), reflecting an increase of 500 MW from the previous limit.

“We greatly appreciate today’s decision and I’m sure that this achievement will help to significantly increase the flexibility and reliability of our grid operation and create conditions for expanding cooperation. This is the result of many years of persistent work, which has been particularly challenging since the outbreak of full-scale war. We are grateful to ENTSO-E for its continued support and trust throughout this process,” Volodymyr Kudrytskyi, CEO of Ukrenergo, noted.

The synchronization project with Ukrenergo began in 2017, with the signing of the Agreement on Conditions for the Future Interconnection of the power system of Ukraine with the power system of continental Europe. Ukraine has fully implemented the conditions included in this agreement.

“On 16 March 2022, an emergency synchronization was achieved to signal solidarity between continental Europe and Ukraine. Since then, Ukrenergo has made extraordinary efforts, under difficult wartime conditions, to achieve full compliance with the operational rules,” the statement of the ENTSO-E said.

The ENTSO-E represents 39 electricity transmission system operators from 35 European countries, making it the largest integrated electricity network in the world.
